“The things which are most important don’t always scream the loudest” – Bob Hawke
Our Larrikin PM! The Silver bodgie! Rhodes Scholar, beer skulling octogenarian!
Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991 Bob Hawke is Labour’s longest serving PM and maintains the highest approval rating of any Australian PM. Prior to his realm in government, Hawke was a Rhodes Scholar and became a leader through the Australia Council of Trade Unions advocating for workers’ rights and wages. During his time as PM he oversaw significant economic and social changes in the 1980s including the floating of the Australian dollar and financial deregulation. When Australia won the America’s Cup in 1983 Hawke famously pronounced “Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum” and he once held the world record for downing a yard of beer in just 11 seconds.
